SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has announced an emergency order that will open up two parking lots to homeless people living inside their vehicles.
Seattlepi.com reports (http://goo.gl/5nF5JH ) Murray’s office said in a news release Tuesday that the order seeks to open lots in Ballard and Delridge to accommodate up to 50 vehicles. The proposal will go before the City Council.
The order, which also includes case management services for residents, comes after Murray declared a state of emergency of homelessness in November. The plan for the parking lots is part of the $7.3 million package included in the declaration to address the city’s homeless population.
Mayor spokesman Viet Shelton says the emergency order will help direct those living in vehicles to services that will get them connected to more permanent housing.
